What Are Compoundable Offences?

Compoundable Offences: In India, compoundable offences are those criminal offences where the victim or complainant agrees to enter into a compromise with the accused person. When a crime is considered compoundable, it means that the parties involved can resolve the matter by reaching an agreement outside the court. This allows the accused person to avoid a lengthy legal process and the associated consequences. The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (CrPC) provides a list of compoundable offences under Section 320. The list includes a variety of offences, ranging from minor to serious, and both bailable and non-bailable offences can be compoundable. If a person has been accused of a compoundable offence , they can approach the victim and propose a compromise. The victim can agree to the compromise and file an affidavit stating that they no longer want to pursue the case.
